Dusty May: Inside FAU Basketball

Dusty May led Florida Atlantic to what is - no question - its greatest season in school history in the 2022-23 campaign to include a Final Four appearance and a program best 35-4 record.

May holds titles including CBS Sports National Coach of the Year, NABC All-District 17 Coach of the Year, Conference USA Coach of the Year and Palm Beach County Coach of the Year.

May is the Owls’ all-time leader in coaching wins, he has all winning seasons under his watch and a very, very long list of program records at FAU.

Before his position at the helm at FAU, Coach May spent seven seasons on Mike White’s coaching staffs, first at Louisiana Tech University - then the University of Florida. May was a student manager for the Indiana University men’s basketball team and on staff at USC, Eastern Michigan, Murray State and UAB.

As the Owls are set to tip off their 2023-2024 basketball season, we dive into the huddle with Coach May in Episode 62 of The Paige Kornblue Show where I chat one-on-one with him about their incredible Final Four run and Cinderella story season. We also jump into the emotions, standout moments, and lessons learned along the way plus May's thoughts on NIL and the season ahead.

Coach May opens up about his life off the court as well, exploring the balance of coaching, fatherhood, and the profound takeaways that have shaped his coaching journey.

Dusty May's coaching acumen and passion for the game have taken FAU's basketball program to unprecedented heights.

“Our guys, the staff and the players have put so much time into this game trying to perfect our craft… playing it, talking about it, studying it, and for all of it to come to that point where you're doing something that's literally - it can transcend generations. I heard Charles Barkley say on CBS that this might be the greatest story in the history of our sport, meaning college basketball. And I paused for a second and thought about it and thought, if we're in the top 1,000 stories in the history of our sport then I'm very grateful to be a be a part of it,” said May.

“Everything's different now though. We have another mountain to climb. There's going to be a whole new set of issues and challenges and so we have to block out last year, learn from what we did well. We just have to stay the course and try to reinvent ourselves now,” added May.

The Owls open the season on the road at the Barstool Invitational on Wednesday, Nov. 8 against Loyola Chicago. Florida Atlantic returns to Boca Raton for the first home game of the season on Tuesday, Nov. 14 against Eastern Michigan on the Abessinio Court at Eleanor R. Baldwin Arena at 7 p.m.
